Discover Recovery in a Virtual, Judgment-Free Zone

Wheeling, W.Va. —  June 17, 2020 — The Community Impact Coalition and partners are hosting Discover Recovery as a virtual event from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2020.

The second annual event’s original date was during National Prevention Month in May, but it was postponed and moved online in order to comply with social distancing guidelines because of COVID-19. 

The June 23 event will use both Zoom and Facebook Live technology simultaneously to link the public with resources that represent the full spectrum of help for people with substance use and alcohol use disorder: from detoxification to treatment to recovery. Some exhibitors will address potential barriers that can deter a person from entering treatment, and help and support for family and friends also will be available.

“Individuals with drug or alcohol dependency often need services long before they are ready or willing to accept help,” said Lori Garrett-Bumba, YSS Prevention Services director. “Discover Recovery’s purpose is to provide advance resources and the opportunity to pre-plan for a person with substance use or alcohol use disorder and their families.”

Exhibitors will include Northwood Health Systems, BreakThru at WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital, The Unity Center, area 12-step programs, and Youth Services System’s Recovery Homes, Lazarus House and Mary & Martha House, among many others. “It’s a judgment free zone,” YSS Prevention project coordinator Marisa Scott said.

Additional partners include Youth Services System, the City of Wheeling and The Unity Center.
