Northwood Health Systems (NHS) offers various resources for mental health care and rehabilitation. NHS provides clients with services for addiction, mental health, and intellectual disabilities along with a DUI training program. According to their website, the care facility is “committed to helping people achieve their highest possible quality of life.”
Located here in Wheeling, WV, NHS provides types of care that can be difficult to find at other facilities. According to WTRF, when the Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC) closed its doors, NHS didn’t hesitate to expand its services to repair that gap in health services and ensure the Wheeling community and the state would not lose such essential care. In 2021, NHS announced its plans to open a behavioral health facility that would offer the same mental health and addiction services that OVMC provided.
NHS has consistently updated and expanded its services based on the needs and demands of the community. In 2022, NHS announced its Mobile Response Unit initiative as part of the Crisis Intervention and Overdose Response Program. This program joins NHS with the Wheeling Police Department (WPD) to respond to overdose and mental health calls in the area. The Mobile Response Unit activates when an officer is called to help an individual experiencing a mental health issue or drug overdose.
NHS operates four primary medical clinics located in WV: Wheeling, Moundsville, Weirton, and New Martinsville. In addition, NHS offers services at various other locations that can be found on their website.
YSS and NHS have had a long history of working in collaboration together through our First Episode Psychosis Grant as well as harm reduction services offered through our prevention department. Northwood provides psychiatric, therapeutic, and supportive services to those experiencing psychosis and/or addiction. They offer crisis stabilization and detox programs that also serve as a resource for our community.
